Chapter Fifteen

The next day went without any problems. The monsters merely watched them from the shadows. Despite their conversation the night before, Henry was mostly silent for the duration of the day.

She could only imagine what was going through his head. The dark cloud that wove itself through his aura had lessened a bit, but one conversation was hardly enough to heal a lifetime of pain. Yet, she still wished she could just take it all away from him. Henry had a good soul, and it wasn’t fair that he suffered so.

“We’ll make camp at the next meadow,” Henry said. His demeanor had lightened a bit and a flicker of excitement danced in his eyes.

“What’s in this meadow? You look like you’ve been given a bag of gold.”

“You’ll see,” he said with a wink.

Sade fought to keep herself from staring at him, so she focused on the path in front of her. What was wrong with her?

It’s only because he still isn’t at peace, once he is I will move on to something else.

It most certainly wasn’t because of the way his eyes lit up when he smiled, or how deeply he cared about the Mortal Realm he called home.

Henry was only meant to be in her life temporarily. She had a destiny to fulfill, and Henry wasn’t part of it.

Oh, come now, don’t be so dramatic. We don’t have to go. The crimson figure’s voice called out from somewhere deep in her mind. She pushed it back further. She didn’t need to listen to that thing. Once she was settled in her new home, she would take some time and figure out what it was.

She focused on her runes, checking on the creatures that trailed behind them. Their bodies quivered with fear, and a few fell back.

Good. They needed to be afraid of something and she would rather it be her than anything else.

A lone howl broke her concentration and she shot Henry a worried look.

“It’s only a wolf,” he said. “It’s getting dark and they’re probably preparing to go on a hunt.”

“Do you talk to wolves?”

She searched her memory for such an ability, but she couldn’t remember anything from the scrolls she’d read. Then again, none of them had ever mentioned that plants had their own language. She was starting to get the impression that the Goddess of Fates had been very selective on her reading material.

“No, but I’ve lived long enough to know their habits. It’s a good sign, the skessa aren’t nearby. The wolves fear them and won’t go within a hundred miles of them.”

“It seems fate is on our side?”

“For now. Don’t get comfortable. If you hear the sounds of stones breaking that means a skessa has spotted you.”

“And what do I do then?”

“You have two choices, you can either run or fight. Since you are the only hope the people of Pavento have at getting cured, I would choose the first option.”

“Have you ever tried talking to them?”

“My mother tried. Many times. It's not easy to talk to something that is hurtling a boulder the size of a horse at you.
